Paraklete Is…Experienced and Practical

Throughout this year, I have received requests from community and faith leaders to partner with them in the task of providing parents with the information needed to confidently help their children to succeed. Each presentation is designed to raise awareness about the ways adults and communities can assist children, youth, and emerging adults (age 18-25) in their total development (including intellectual, social, emotional, physical, and spiritual/moral). Depending on the audience, my webinars give special attention to the influences of parenting, culture, technology, relationships, and brain functioning on the development and mental health of children, youth, and young adults. After one of my webinars designed for Christian parents of emerging adults, a parent wrote the following:

Dr. Linda,
We (both my husband and I) were on Zoom with you and have our first college kid this year. Your presentation brought a lot of new concepts to us and it took me back to the day when I was reading, What To Expect When You Are Expecting, 18 years ago. It was a lot to digest. My two main takeaways [from the webinar] were “build relationship” and “live your own life by faith.” I am interested in any of your future presentations.

I was glad to know that the information I shared about relationship building, especially about nurturing emotional closeness between parent and child during the first 18 years of life, seemed to resonate with this webinar participant. For parents of emerging adults, I also highly recommend the book, How to Really Love Your Adult Child: Building a Healthy Relationship in a Changing World, written by Gary Chapman & Ross Campbell, M.D.
